WOMEX 13 Official Showcase Selection

From mesmerising, meditative passages of looping beauty, slowly building through ominously dark scraping of increasing intensity until exploding into searing metallic sheets of apocalyptic angst, Jambinai's appropriation of traditional Korean instruments like haegeum, piri and geomungo into their electronic post-rock soundtracks reflects the spiritual and social contradictions facing a generation coming of age in the 21st century. The band emerged from the indie scene of Seoul's hip quarter of Hongdae in 2011 to win a prize at the EBS Hello Rookie competition. Just two years later their album Differance was named Best Jazz and Crossover Album at the Korean Music Awards and they were invited to the World Village Festival in Finland and Cena Contemporanea 2013 in Brazil. Challenging, provocative and compelling, Jambinai inhabit the dark borderlands where tradition meets the modern world.
