The group Maqamat is considered an extension of the group Al-Bayariq ensemble which was founded by the famous artist Munir Bechir supervised by the famous Oud player Naseer Shamma. The members of Maqamat were the main members of Al-Bayariq.
Anwar Abudragh founded Maqamat Ensemble representing the Iraqi maqam school in 2006 in order to share this important Arabic musical and lyrical school with the rest of the world. This school is the representative of the Mesopotamian music art and civilization. Maqamat portrays the classical Arabic heritage of music particularly 'maqam'. Maqam holds a very important place among the Arabic classical lyrical forms.
Maqamat's music is a contemplative form of music. All the members studied music at the Institute of Musical Studies and the College of Fine Arts at Baghdad University in Iraq, where they also later taught music there. They deepened their musical knowledge by studying different Iraqi maqam styles from different periods.
The ensemble performs in many European countries as well as Arabic countries including: Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Greece, Jordan, Lebanon ,Egypt ,Abu-Dhabi and Algeria.
