Horizons Stage (Special Focus)
Connoisseurs of the UK folk scene will need no introduction to the names of Brian Finnegan and Aidan O'Rourke. Flute and tin-whistle maestro Finnegan hails from Armagh in Northern Ireland and played with renowned Anglo-Irish combo, Flook. Master fiddler Aidan O'Rourke from Scotland's Isle of Sell is also one third of the trail-blazing folk trio, Lau. In Kan they join forces with Ian Stephenson on acoustic guitar and Jim Goodwin on drums. Stephenson plays with 422 and Baltic Crossing and Goodwin is percussionist with the Halle and Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras. They form a tight, lyrical and funky rhythm section, driving the inspired improvisations of Finnegan and O'Rourke. "Kan explore the relationship between the authority of traditional melody and its contemporary aspects of harmony, sonority and groove", says their PR. Sounds good to us.
