Kroke means Krakow in Yiddish. In the life and work of the three musicians of Kroke it marks a fundamental point of reference to their cultural and artistic identity. The ensemble was founded in 1992 at the initiative of three friend Tomasz Lato, Tomasz Kukurba and Jerzy Bawol graduates of the Krakow Music Academy.
Until now they have released five albums out of with the fourth in line 'The Sounds of the Vanishing World' actually won the German Musical Critics Award in the year 2000. Taking the traditional Jewish music repertoire as basis for constructing arrangements and improvisations and using their previous experience in Classical music and Jazz Kroke creates new and unique compositions. Kroke composes and plays music which sounds like the quintessence of ancient Jewish music and culture and at the same time as living proof for its unbroken existence.
Live Kroke is playing with the well known Polish Drummer and Percussionist Tomasz Grochot.
