Nive Nielsen & The Deer Children (Greenland)

Territory: Europe except Skandinavia

Current album: Feet First, Nov 2015 (Glitterhouse Records)

If you listen and read about the charismatic pop singer Nive Nielsen, who was born in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, you cannnot but totally be inspired by her! Even the greatest children’s book writers in the world together couldn’t invent her story. In her case at least, the truth is stranger than fiction.

In her childhood Nive was acting in the Hollywood movie ‚The New World‘ starring Colin Farrell and some other child and youth programs for television. But then Nive decided to sing and with her little red ukulele she played her first concert for the Queen of Denmark on national television.
In April 2012 she released her debut album ‚Nive sings‘ on Glitterhouse Records, which was recorded in Montreal, Bristol, San Francisco, Ghent, Tucson and also in Nuuk.

Her songs, which she performed together with her boyfriend, multi-instrumentalist “Cowboy Jan” and her band called ‚The Deer Children‘, telling magic and beautiful stories about love, reindeers, pirates, ghosts and forgetting to make coffee.
The songs themselves are straight out of a storybook that never was. They could be from anywhere, and they are hard to place in time. They are hummable folk melodies with a streak of menace, or cowboy ballads with an elfin side. They have a way of sticking in your mind — and not just because they were written by the only Greenlandic Inuit indie ukulele player that you can think of.

Are they snow songs? Inuit Indie? Give them a listen and decide for yourself!

“Like the stories of the Brothers Grimm, there is something dark in the sweetness of Nive Nielsen & the Deer Children. The Greenland band are masters of a haunted and timeless folk music, meant for the night, surrounded by dim candle light or campfire.” – IM VERY APE
