"The five musicians dived deep into the tradition and created a modern variation on the old melodies and tunes. With typical Xarnege rhythms and arrangements they create an almost rock sound on acoustic and sometimes ancient instruments. Full of passion they go from upbeat dances to darkish songs and hypnotising vibes."

Xarnege: reinventing the traditional music of Vasconia.
XARNEGE is the musical project which brings together Basque and Gascon musicians, who face, without any compromise, the root of a music born in Pyrenees. Xarnege is a Gascon word referring to the villages on either side of the Gascon-Basque border where people express themselves in both regional languages. Cultural characteristics are also shared; many folk songs are recognizably the same tune yet played differently, with different instruments, sung in a different language and danced with different steps. The roots of these similarities go back to the ancient county of Vasconia.
Te five musicians of XARNEGE are coming together to create a fresh cross-border fusion, by contrasting, comparing and celebrating the rich repertoire of gavottes, branles, jauzis, segidas, polkas, rondeus, waltzes and mutchikoak, delivered with energetic expertise on an arsenal of local instruments such as sonsaina, salterius, txanbela, flabuta, ttun-ttun and a fine selection of local bagpipes.
XARNEGE is officially selected to perform at WOMEX 16 Special Focus ATLANTIC CONNECTIONS.
