The project Mascarimirì took shape between the Fall of 1997 and the Winter of 1998, when Claudio ‘Cavallo’ Giagnotti and Cosimo Giagnotti (two brothers of Roma origins) chose to end their experience with Terra de Menzu, one of the first bands that, at the beginning of the 1990s, contributed to the resurgence of Salento traditional music. Between 1999 and 2003 the musical project got stronger and more mature. Vito Giannone (mandolin) and Beppe Branca (bass) joined Claudio ‘Cavallo’. Branca’s entry in the group, with the introduction of the bass line in the groove of pizzica pizzica, represented the out-and-out turning point towards Tradinnovazione. “Punk-Dub Tarantolato Salentino” was the definition used to underline the experimental vocation of the band that inserted into the traditional musical heritage some techniques not used, until then, in the traditional music style of Salento. When Beppe Branca left the band, Alessio Amato, a very young musician, joined it. Following the lead of Beppe Branca, in the last 10 years Alessio Amato has been promoting and combining the sounds and styles of electronic music. With 8 studio-recorded albums, and a first-class concert activity, the band from Muro Leccese represents, today, the most innovative expression of Pizzica Pizzica Salentina.

It is a DJ/LIVE SET by Mascarimirì, a project that mixes past and future in music from Southern Italy. The sound travels from the traditional festive celebrations to clubs and much more innovative venues, using the Sound System as a dance language, in the name of the circularity which connects the Tamburreddhu from Salento, the vinyl and the CD today. Ballati!!!
