company description

Harmony, Hip-hop and Haka from New Zealand at the Womex 2005 / STALL tba

'As a singer with political and cultural consciousness, Moana is one of the most renowned artists to emerge from N.Z...she creates a fusion between smooth world music and the urban sound with earthy international beats.' (Suddeutsche Zeitung-Extra, 2002).

'Music of great depth and beauty, melding traditional and contemporary styles without compromising either'....(New Zealand Herald, 2003)

As a songwriter, Moana draws inspiration from her own rich culture. Her songs touch on the indigenous struggle with colonisation. They explain the difference between "moko" and western-style tattoo. Her lyrics talk about reclaiming land, culture and identity. But they also speak of spirituality, prophecies and respect for women. Despite being inspired by her own culture, Moanas songs contain messages that are universal.

In 2002, the band released its first CD into Europe. TORU was described as 'one of the most intelligent pop CDs for a long time' (WOM Journal 2002).

Onstage, this charismatic artist is supported by a collective of talented performers called the Tribe.

Every performance by the group is a wild fusion of contemporary and indigenous music, dance, songs, poi-rhythms and movement.

Traditional war-dances are fused with modern breakdance. A young rapper and breakdancer flips across the stage and then plays a selection of rare ancient Maori flutes and instruments known as taonga puoro. These treasures had almost disappeared from Maori culture with some having been recorded for the very first time by Moana and her musicians.

Occasionally, rappers, DJs and classical musicians join the Tribe onstage and the energy is high octave.

Moana & the Tribe includes an award-winning filmmaking team that creates and projects archival footage, stills, images from contemporary Maori artists, and stunning landscapes to compliment the lyrics of each song.

Filmmaker Toby Mills will showcase 'Our Home', and the bands latest video at this years WOMEX Film Screening on Saturday Oct 25.

With four albums, a DVD and countless international tours to her credit, Moana is emerging as 'N.Zs most exciting music-export' (Marie Claire, 2002).

Last year, the band toured Europe on the release of it's debut album.

This year, Moana & the Tribe were the very first N.Z group to release a DVD into Germany. As part of the 'Live and Proud Tour 2003', the band performed at the world famous Herod Atticus, under the shadow of the Acropolis as guests of the Greek government and Olympic Committee.

In doing so, they cemented their reputation as one of the most successful indigenous bands to emerge from Aotearoa.
