Stelios Petrakis was born in 1975 and grew up in Sitia, Crete. He began learning the art of the Cretan lyra at the age of eight. In 1993 he moved to Athens and, mentored by one of his early teachers, Ross Daly, he continued his studies across a broad range of Turkish and Greek music forms and instruments. His eclectic interests have brought him to work with a diverse and impressive list of international artists and he has remained an active member of Ross Daly's Labyrinth Ensemble. With the fluently virtuosic Cretan Quartet he focuses on the great music traditions of his home island, with a repertoire consisting of both traditional pieces and his own tradition-inspired compositions, accompanied by Andonis and Giorgios Stavrakakis on laouto, kopuz and vocals and featuring the adroit dancing of Thanassis Mavrokostas.
