company description
MOSHITO is the South African Music Industry Conference, Trade Fair and Showcase. For more than 10 years, the importance of the South African music industry in both buttressing economic growth and enhancing the development of a true South African identity has been emphasised by the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC).As far back as 1995, the DAC released its White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage. Two critical developments that arose from the White Paper were the 1998 Cultural Industries Growth Strategy (CIGS), and the 2000 Music Industry Task Team (MITT).
The CIGS research identified key actions that needed to be undertaken to realise the potential of the music industry to contribute to economic growth. The MITT made 37 recommendations that were felt to be critical to overcome current impasses in the industry.
Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition is an important instrument in the implementation of these policy documents. Formed as a broadly representative section 21 company in 2004, Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition sees the DAC working in partnership with various music industry organisations and other partners to maximise the role of the industry in economic development, job creation, poverty alleviation and socio-cultural development within South Africa.
Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition is the institutional body that hosts Moshito each year. It also oversees projects that arise out of Moshito's annual conferences, among them the South African Music Export Council and the Music Managers Forum of South Africa.
"Moshito's purpose is to maximise the potential of the sector for economic growth, job creation, poverty alleviation and socio-cultural development"
Moshito is structured as Public-Private Partnership representing music industry interests, National Government (Department of Arts and Culture) and has partnered with the Gauteng Department of Sports Arts Culture and Recreation, the City of Johannesburg, as well as NGOs like BASA (Business Arts South Africa) and the SABC.
Beyond being a trade fair, Moshito has given life to various projects and institutional arrangements in the Music Industry including South African Music Export Council, the Association of Independent Record Companies and the Music Managers Forum.
