After studying composition at Kunitachi College of Music, Tamami Tono continued her studies at Keio University and majored with an MA in Media and Governance. As a composer, she has received numerous prizes including First Prize for National Theatre Composition Concours in Japan, the special prize for performing-arts production by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, and the Jomo Music Prize. In 2002-2003, she was the resident composer of both the Centre de Creation Musicale Iannis Xenakis, and The Silk Road Project led by Yo-Yo Ma.

Tamami's music has been performed and highly acclaimed in Japan and abroad including International Society of Contemporary Music "World Music Days", the International Computer Music Conference, the MoMA Exhibition "Cross Fade", Space Dance "Hiten" Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA 2005).

As a solo performer and a member of Reigakusha Gagaku Ensemble, she has performed gagaku, the ancient court music of Japan, and regularly appears at the National theatre of Japan. She is a distinguished composer of "contemporary gagaku", and has participated in the Tanglewood Summer Festival, the Lincoln Centre Festival, the "Wien Modern" festival of contemporary arts, the Ultima Festival of contemporary music in Oslo, and many others. In 2002 as a distinguished gagaku performer she received "Kenzo Nakajima Best Music Special Prize".
