WOMEX 13 Official Showcase Selection

Bongar is formed by members of the Xamba Nation, a candomble yard and religious house in Quilombo on the outskirts of Olinda, Pernambuco. They are the contemporary representatives of a centuries-old tradition of powerful percussion and chanting with West African Yoruba origins that accompanies the mystical trance rituals of the Jurema cult, which has come to symbolize the struggle against persecution, and act as a flag of autonomy, for the indigenous minorities in a modern culturally pluralistic Brazil. With their compelling live performances full of dynamic drumming and the rousing voice of singer Guitinho weaving around the insistent chanting, Bongar continue their mission to further awareness of the ancient festive rituals that have spawned the combustible rhythms of the coco do xamba, maracatu, cirandas and candomble and draw audiences around the world into the celebrations.
