Born in Miyakojima in 1984, Haruna grew up playing sanshin and singing with people in the local community. Although Western pop stars such as The Beatles and Mariah Carey influenced her in teenage years, her soul and heart was always with the music of her roots. At the age of 22, after she was chosen as Miss Miyakojima, she became increasingly popular and was invited to many events in and outside her island of Miyakojima to play the sanshin. Two years later, she started to work for Miyakojima TV as a presenter where she actively introduced the island's folk music. This experience led her to pursue a career as professional musician.
