Choc Quib Town are an Afro-Colombian hip-hop band whose independently released debut album, Somos Pacifico, won them critical acclaim. Founded in Quibdo, the capital city of the (mainly black) Choco region of Colombia, Choc Quib Town are comprised chiefly of rappers Tostao, Goyo(also leadvocalist in the well known group Sidestepper), and Slow, in addition to several musicians who perform the band's tropical style of hip-hop. Choc Quib Town made their full-length recording debut in 2006 with the independently released Somos Pacifico. The album was subsequently remastered in London and re-released in 2007 on the Polen label. In 2008, as acclaim for the band continued to mount -- including a pair of Premios Shock (Colombian Grammy's) nominations -- Choc Quib Town released in October 2008 El Bombo, a three-track EP as teaser to their upcoming album early 2009.
CQT are very succesful in Colombia but are since 2007 catching the attention to fans of so called Latin Hip Hop and Electrocumbe (the new emerging Folklore meets Electronica scene of Bogota) all
over Latin America and North America. Their unusual and original mixture of Catchy Latin Hip Hop, Urban Soul, Afro Colombian Folkloric music from the Pacific Coast, such as Currulao and Chirimia, and some Salsa has been extremely successful at home and abroad. Their strong asset is that they play all live: mixing beats of the DJ with live bass, folkloric percussion, Marimbas and drums. They had a huge hit all over Colombia, but specially in the Black communities, with their "Somos Pacifico". They recorded a track with the well known French DJ Oxmo Puccino. Performed with Urban Salsa band La 33, Sidestepper, Telmary, Sergent Garcia and Orishas. They had their fist European tour in the summer of 2008 and played Madrid, Barcelona, Marseille, Paris and Berlin.
In july they did a short European tour as part of their tour to promote the new album "ORO" in Geneva, Bern and Gent Belgium. The music tradefair & conference WOMEX selected CQT after
their impressive SXSW showcase to showcase in Copenhagen on the 30th of October.
