company description
With over 30,000 members across the UK, the Musicians' Union represents performers, composers and music teachers in all genres of music and provides a wide range of services tailored to the needs of professional musicians.FOLK, ROOTS AND TRADITIONAL MUSIC SECTION
The FRTM section was established in 1998, to represent the interests of the MU members in the above sectors and to promote folk, roots and traditional music, both in the UK and overseas.
An elected Committee meets regularly to discuss issues of importance to section members and is engaged in a variety of initiatives designed to heighten the profile of this important genre of music and to protect and enhance members' rights, opportunities and fees
The section has a presence on the PRS Specialist Music Group and continues to ensure that the interests of musicians and songwriters are clearly represented. As well as lobbying for more and better exposure of folk and traditional music in the media, the section promotes members at the events such as WOMEX and the AFO Conference, providing real assistance to UK folk artists in establishing an international profile.
Providing support to new artists is an essential part of the sections' remit and committee members, together with the full time Union official, are active in this area on a daily basis. The section provides free membership for one year to the winners of the BBC Yong Folk Awards and attends the annual BBC Folk Music Awards as well as major events around the UK.
Members of the section enjoy all the standard benefits of MU membership, including free instrument and public liability insurance, legal advice and representation, contract advice, copyright registration service, band partnership agreements and comprehensive information and guidance on all matters relating to the music business.
