Only recently Tsuyuki&Rosenboom were enthusiastically celebrated at the “Chicago Duo Piano Festival” in the USA where they presented their transcription of Liszt’s “Totentanz” for four hands. The audience cheered their guest performance with standing ovations. In 2014 the transcriptions of the duo also caused a sensation in Germany: “spectacular sounds emanated from the soundboard” and “an acoustically and visually extraordinary event” were some of the comments you could read in the press.
Chie Tsuyuki and Michael Rosenboom got to know each other while studying at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien (HMTM – academy for music, theatre and media) in Hanover, Germany. For the first time in a concert the two pianists performed Beethoven’s “Große Fuge” op.134 for four hands – an event that was of utmost importance for both musicians: “we discovered completely new means of expression and felt that we were kindred spirits.”
That is why the piano duo Tsuyuki&Rosenboom was established in 2009. Soon afterwards they gained international attention and were invited to give a concert at St.Martin-in-the-Fields in London. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the series NDR Kultur “START – Junge Künstler Live” the duo was presented to a wider audience.
In the following year Tsuyuki&Rosenboom performed Saint-Saens’ “Le carnaval des animaux” ( the carnival of the animals ) together with the actor Christian Quadflieg and the symphony orchestra Göttingen, conducted by Christoph-Mathias Mueller. The press was full of praise for the duo’s “enormous wealth of facets” and enthusiastic about the “magic” of their play.
Professor Bernd Goetzke, by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli considered as his last student, is the person who has always had an enormous impact on the duo’s artistic development. Since 2009 Professor Goetzke has been in charge of the duo’s musical education and both pianists studied in his solo class at the HMTM in Hanover. Since that time, concerts played on one or two pianos have taken Tsuyuki&Rosenboom to the music centres of Europe, to the USA and to Asia. They also cooperated closely with different radio stations in Germany and the USA. Although both musicians uphold the extensive standard repertoire of the genre, their concert programmes meanwhile also include largely unknown treasures and first performances of contemporary composers.
Since 2012 Tsuyuki&Rosenboom have been focussing their enthusiasm more and more on transcribing works from different epochs and genres for their instrumentation – a creative activity which offers them the possibility to simultaneously give expression to their shared ambition to compose and to their admiration for music literature in its entirety. Transcriptions have meanwhile become the centre of Tsuyuki&Rosenboom’s artistic creativity. They even have several soirée programmes that only include the steadily increasing number of their own arrangements.
Tsuyuki&Rosenboom have been granted numerous awards at international competitions and festivals. In 2010 – only one year after establishing the duo – they won the first prize and the “Kawai Award” at the ”International Piano Duo Competition Tokyo”, followed by numerous other competition awards. They also were award winners of the “International Music Competition London” and the “Chicago Liszt 200 Piano Duo Competition”. In 2013 they got the first prize at the “International Musi Competition Pietro Argento” in Italy and in 2014 the first prize as well as the Grieg special award at the international competition for piano duos “Grieg à deux” in Oslo, Norway – a competition organised in cooperation with the European Piano Teachers Association (EPTA).
