Kurtish Jasharov (1958) ranks among the leading three Macedonian Roma saxophone and clarinet players. He is based in Stip, Macedonia, the home town of a long line of the outstanding Roma artists (the most famous so far being Ferus Mustafov). He is also the one of the rare Roma popular musicians with classical education and with finished musical academy. So he has always combined the typical Roma wedding business with teaching clarinet at musical schools and writing local Roma hits with writing scores for local performing arts productions.
The name of Kurtish is linked to a number of highly prestigious Roma musical projects.
He is one of the famous brass band Kadriovi brothers and in the eighties he was the leader of its strongest line-up, documented on two excellent albums of those times.
Kurtish was the hidden Roma musical ace and heart of famous Time of Gypsies film by Emir Kusturica, providing themes, recording for the soundtrack, even playing in the film, but at the Sarajevo premiere of the film he was shocked to discover his contribution was ignored and all the credits were given to Goran Bregovic, whose climb up the world music ladders has been thus given a big push also by his work. Kurtish reacted by withdrawing to the wedding scene, where has always been at the top of the most wanted lists. He also appeared on famous Top 5 ferus Mustafov compilation album of the late 80's presenting the leading figures of the clarinet and saxophone of those times, selling in over 100.000 copies in the markets of Yugoslavia of those times.
The music of Kurtish does not only play on the aces of technically accomplished macho speed, but is equally magnetic because of its abundance of more refined, lyrical tunes. Most of them are really new, not present yet in the Roma wedding circuit, as Kurtish is one of the very few creative composers in the Macedonian Roma community, creating new fresh tunes with ease. Sometimes they sound like the material that should have appeared in the Time of The Gipsies soundtrack, sometimes they surprise us with innovative accompaniment, sometimes with lyrical outbursts of clarinet located somewhere between the meditative Oriental Roma local sound and local lyrical Macedonian Slavic blues.
