Naat Veliov is one of the masters of Balkan trumpet. He was born in 1957, into a family of trumpet players, in the Roma mahala of Kochani, Macedonia. His father and his grandfather were trumpet players, as is son Orhan. To this day, Naat has continued the tradition of keeping the ensemble among close relatives and neighbors. When Naat was 18, he was invited to Skopje to make his first professional recordings.
His path to worldwide popularity began with his appearance in Emir Kusturica's "Time of the Gypsies" which led to festivals and concert tours throughout countries in the Balkans, the Western Europe and Worldwide. These days he is split between local performances in Macedonia and concerts in Europe, especially in Germany, Austria and Italy. He also appeared in the documentary film Life of the Dervishes for Belgian Television and the serial movie Life of the Gypsies for Italian Television. He composed the soundtracks for the movie Mondo, for French Television and the theatre performance Antigona for theater house from Italy.
Naat Veliov, together with his orchestra, was one of the first Balkan brass acts to release a CD in Western Europe (L'Orient Est Rouge for Crammed in 1995), and has recorded four albums (CDs) for various international publishers since then. His music appears on a number of compilations. A number of worldwide artists are fans of Naat's music and some have invited him to join them at their concerts and studio work.
