Mere Mortals, the native Vancouver/ Bucharest solo project of Dan Handrabur, has been in evolution for five years as a downtempo side-project reflecting his otherworldly influences and indigenous perimeters. The result of these explorations has brought about a richly distinct ethno-morphic drum’n’bass flavored sound that often glides between the worlds of pop substance and avant-garde electronicisms. The ethereal echoes of wife/ vocalist/ collaborator Cristina Handrabur join him on occasion where magic meets innovation from their headquarters, Outersanctum Studios. Having relocated the studio to their homeland Romania in the summer of 1999, the Mere Mortals project has gathered fresh material influenced by its original eastern-euro-ethno-gypsy sound, to be released as a full length entitled “Universal Code” on Interchill Records in spring of 2002.
“The album is well produced, many good melodic riffs skilfully merging with tripped-out noises. In some ways Dan approaches William Orbit in his electronic musical imagination.”
The Insight – Brighton, UK
“Universal Code is an artist album of real strength. In essence it is an enigmatic delves into broken beats, fat basslines, echoing samples, and Aphex Twin style discordance.”
Freaky Bob, Peek Magazine, Canada
“Mere Mortals is his World Music-flavored alter ego (…) creating an old world counterpoint to Mere Mortals’ space age dub and funky hip-hop rhythms are melodies from zither, piano and woodwinds.”
Chris Twomey, Exclaim! Magazine, Canada
