"In an era of one-click distribution and unlimited access for music fans around the globe, how have artists developed new genres of music and found (new) audiences?

We’ll use Spotify data & experience to examine a few artists (such as Tanya Tagaq, The Very Best, Stromae, Baloji, Ibeyi, Babymetal, etc), and look at how they exist within or transcend location, find & build audiences and break through globally.

We’ll also look at where these artists were first heard and if they brought along any of their influences / direct musical peers with them on that journey. We’ll discuss “borderlessness” (as facilitated by new deals between artists & labels/distributors/aggregators) and generate some ideas and questions about the next phase of global music (perhaps “post-world”, in the manner of post-bop and post-rock)."
