Harouna Samake ‘Kamale Blues’ by Carolina Vallejo

Links

Harouna Samake has earned his place at the top table of kamale n’goni players. He has toured internationally with Salif Keita since 2001 as well as working with artists such as Bassekou Kouyate, Blick Bassy, Sali Sidibe and many others, appearing on over 50 albums to date. Now he is stepping forward in his own Kamale Blues project with an uplifting set of dance-inducing Malian grooves, taking the microphone for some sparkling duets with his wife, Assetou Diakite, amid dexterous displays of kamale n’goni mastery. Harouna first heard the instrument at the age of eight and began collecting a branch, a calabash, a goatskin and some strings, finally finding an n’goni player who could assemble it for him in exchange for cutting hay for a new mattress.

The rest, as they say, is history.
