The session is an insight into a world of incredible women performers, of a black and white era, of the salon, courtesans, anecdotes, photographs and song. While women singers played an essential role in the making of the music market, they stand largely forgotten. The beginning of the world of entertainment starts in the Indian subcontinent with the gramophone era – ‘Women on Record’ is a multi-media presentation highlighting stories of women performers, Diva’s of their time, music, theatre and film.

The session will discuss the intersections of gender, performance and technology and the importance of mainstreaming conversations through performance, as well as the importance of archiving in oral traditions.
