Meet the Winner of the WOMEX 14 Professional Excellence Award: Mário Lúcio Sousa is a musician, writer and poet. Founder of the seminal Cape Verde band, Simentera. He studied law in Havana in the 80s, returning to Cape Verde to work as a lawyer in 1990. Appointed cultural advisor to the Ministry of Culture in 1992, member of parliament 1996-2001. Since 2011 he holds the office of Minister of Culture for the State of Cabo Verde.
