Norayr Kartashyan is acclaimed as one of Armenia’s finest woodwind masters and composers. Born in 1967 he started learning the clarinet at the age of 10. At music college, he began playing the duduk (double-reed wood pipe) and during his service in the USSR Armed Forces he learnt to play a number of traditional Armenian instruments.

He is now an acknowledged virtuoso on blul, shvi (flutes), duduk, zurna (double-reed trumpet), pku (Armenian clarinet) and parkapzuk (bagpipe). A member of the Armenian Navy Band he formed his VAN Project in 2010 and founded Menua in 2015 with four talented young players from the new generation of the flourishing Armenian traditional music scene. Kartashyan’s compositions are gently unfolding, delicately intertwined evocations of rural music with a timeless connection to the earth, full of
beauty and warmth.
