High-energy rhythms slapped out of an old paprika tin; pandeiro and tambourine driving spirited sung choruses; fiddle, bagpipes and accordion pumping out an invitation to dance before coalescing into a sumptuous drone to underpin a soulfully sung ballad. Radio Cos explore the deep-rooted diversity of Galician folk song and dance with a passion to celebrate the historic nationality’s unique identity and the itinerant influences that have helped form its musical culture.
The band is led by Xurxo Fernandes and Quique Peón, two percussion-playing singers and ethnographers who have been researching, travelling and collecting songs around the autonomous community for three decades and their multitudinous archives of field recordings provide the Radio Cos project with its raw material. Joyful, inspirational and bursting with compelling rhythms and indelible melodies: Galician soul music.
