We long for more and consistent innovation in classical music, especially where larger organisations such as orchestras and concert halls are concerned. But what is the secret of successful innovation in music programming? What are the factors which enhance and encourage it and those that hamper or kill it? Is there an involuntary or subconscious pull towards conservatism and playing safe in the industry or sector? Can we get to the heart of the success factors in achieving challenging or innovative ideas and getting closer to renewing our audiences? This debate hypothesises the existence of a virtual chain in innovative programming, in which some links are weaker than others. Does this chain exist, and if so, where are the weak and the strong links? Panelists will also be asked to describe the essence of lasting innovation in classical music practice.
Biographies
Henk Heuvelmans:
Henk Heuvelmans (1954) has worked at Gaudeamus since 1981 and in 1996 became its director. The annual festival Gaudeamus Muziekweek is one of the organisation’s chief responsibilities. He has initiated many festivals, concerts, international exchanges and co-productions all over the world, as part of his tenure at Gaudeamus.
Neil Wallace:
Neil Wallace is Programme Director of the Doelen Concert Hall in Rotterdam and Artistic Director of Haarlem’s International Choral Biennale. Before he was Chief Executive of Cardiff’s Chapter Arts Centre and Deputy Director of Glasgow 1990. 2007, he co-designed a Masters Degree in Music Programming for the ArtEZ Conservatory.
Yannick Hiwat:
Yannick Hiwat, born. 1988, following his classical violin studies and a two-year commission with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, Durban (SA), Yannick graduated as a jazz violinist, founded the 'Ananse Orchestra' and is a sought-after session player as well as touring extensively with his 7 piece jazz and string quartet 'The YHQ(s)'.
Ruth Mackenzie:
Ruth Mackenzie CBE is the Artistic Director for the Holland Festival, the Netherlands’ prestigious international arts festival in Amsterdam, with her first festival in June 2015. She is also Interim CEO and Creative Director of The Space, a new digital commissioning body set up by Arts Council England and the BBC.
Gavin Reid:
Gavin Reid has been Director of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra since 2006. Following a decade as a freelance musician, playing, teaching and leading education projects, Gavin was appointed General Manager of Manchester Camerata in 2002. He was one of the first to be selected for the Clore Leadership Programme, which aims to develop the next generation of cultural leaders. Gavin is also currently a member of the Board of Governors of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
