WOMEX 13 CARDIFF * WOMEX 13 Commences in Cardiff
23-10-2013: WOMEX 13 gets underway today as the international music community gathers in Cardiff for the 19th edition of the most important annual global music and networking event. From today until Sunday 27 October, Cardiff - capital city and gateway to the history, culture, language and landscapes of Wales - will be the hot spot for artists, industry professionals and music lovers from around the world. WOMEX 13 Cardiff is hosted by Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales, a partnership between Arts Council of Wales/Wales Arts International and Welsh Music Foundation. Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales' WOMEX 13 event partners are Cardiff Council, Motorpoint Arena and Wales Millennium Centre with support from British Council. Cerdd Cymru : Music Wales and WOMEX gratefully acknowledge the funding support from the Welsh Government to make WOMEX 13 possible. Tonight WOMEX will roll out the red carpet for delegates at the Welsh Opening Concert, Land of Song, celebrating the start of WOMEX 13. Artistic Director of the Opening Concert, Cerys Matthews, has crafted an evening that reflects upon and pays tribute to the musical roots and culture of Wales, honouring the intrinsic link between Welsh history and music. The next five days of WOMEX will feature a Showcase Festival - including the Horizons stage, dedicated to local talent from the UK and Ireland, and the second WOMEX DJ Summit all in all spotlighting over 60 acts with more than 300 artists from over 40 countries on 7 stages in total; a flourishing Trade Fair; a brimming Conference programme with more than 80 speakers from 25 countries in over 20 sessions, Round-Table and One-to-One Mentoring, numerous Networking Meetings, Presentations, Receptions and a Speed-Dating Programme; IMZ Film Screenings and the WOMEX Award Ceremony on Sunday morning. Next year's WOMEX will take place in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia, Spain, and the local WOMEX 14 organisers will be giving a special introduction to their host city and event agenda on Friday 15:00-15:45 in Conference Room 2.
