Accordion player and composer Chango Spasiuk has transformed Chamame - a marginalised rural dance music - into a highly elaborated artform. His role can be compared to that of his compatriot Astor Piazzolla who added jazz elements and a classical note to the Tango. But whereas Tango grew out of the city of Buenos Airies, Chamarme is the music of the country, particularly the sub-tropical, red-earth lands of northeast Argentina, close to the border with Brazil. Chango Spasiuk hails from Misiones, a small province in this region whose population is a mixture of original native communities (Mbya - guarani), descendants of African slaves and settlers from Germany, Poland and Russia. Two of Chango's grandparents came from the Ukraine.
Chamame grew out of a confluence of all these cultural influences, from Polkas, Rancheras, Schotis, Rasguidos Dobles and more. At home, Chango Spasiuk has long added his name to the list of Chamame greats. He has also brought the music to the international festival and concert circuit, refining and reinterpreting the roots without losing the passion, joy and drive that is the essential spirit of Chamame.
