Fermin Muguruza was born in Irun, Spain in the early 60's. Over the last 20 years he has become one of the leading figures of the Basque music scene, singing always in Euskara, the language of the Basque country. His awareness for Basque culture came at an early age as he learnt accordion and guitar. In those days Franco still held Spain in his iron grip and Basque music was officially forbidden but, thanks to a healthy black-market in music cassettes, Fermin became familiar with the great names of Basque music.?In the 80's Muguruza introduced his revolutionary mix of traditional Basque folk music with a raging punk sound, carrying his provocative and forthright lyrics opposing Spanish rule. He was lead vocalist for the bands "Negu Gorriak", "Kortatu" and "Dut", between them releasing altogether 10 albums, over the course of which, influenced by bands such as The Clash and Black Uhuru, he found his way through Rock and Reggae to Ska, Hardcore und Hip-Hop. Today he runs his own record label, which released the albums, "Brigadistak Sound System" and "FM99.00 Dub Manifest", the latter featuring guest singers from all over the world, among them his long-standing friend Mano Chao. The music is always developing but his message and mission remain the same: a peaceful and just solution to the repression of his homeland.
