All music is folk music, said Louis Armstrong, himself a product of the New Orleans melting pot that created jazz at the beginning of the last century. That spirit of creative exchange between jazz and the global diaspora is as life-affirming as ever, and Balkan, Asian, African, Nordic, Latin and Arabic music are all important accents in today's jazz syntax.
In this new century, where does jazz sit within the rubric of world music? Is its appetite for collaboration and risk-taking cherished and understood, or is it regarded as too elusive, too difficult in a musical world that must answer to ever more demanding commercial imperatives? How will we respond as a creative community to a new generation of exceptional artists around the world whose music easily straddles both jazz and world music definitions.
