Session 20
Archival recordings have emerged as a growing business opportunity benefitting not only those who acquire the rights but the artists as well and also the region from which the recordings originated. The reintroduction of archival recordings to new fans around the world raises interest in new music coming out of that region, bringing additional economic benefits as more artists are discovered by a global audience. While a compelling business model and opportunity, murky copyright laws and chain of title can present challenges that make it difficult for these recordings to fully realise their potential, and for composers, artists and performers to be fully compensated. This panel will showcase successful distribution of archival recordings from such regions as Africa and Latin America, while also discussing the issues of global copyright laws.
