In the toolbox of power, governments frequently use the soft power of art in attempt to shape opinions beyond their borders - and as representatives of local culture, world music artists are very much involved.At best it can be seen as healthy government support for deserving local culture - and at worst, a cynical governmental tactic to use artists for much needed positive public relations.
What are the practicalities, challenges and ethics of world music as cultural diplomacy today? And is it becoming more or less relevant?
