Cheikh Lô is a follower of the Baye Fall, a specifically Senegalese form of Islam, whose emphasis is on hard work and dedication to their founder Cheikh Ibra Fall.
Mbalax rhythms (originally a form of drumming and dancing for Wolof celebrations) form the bedrock of Cheikh Lô’s music. The focus is on his lead vocal, acoustic guitar, sabar drums, bass tama (talking drum) and flute with keyboards and drum-kit adding texture.
Youssou N'Dour encountered Cheikh Lô in 1989 and in November 1996 N'Dour presents the Lô's album
