The festival, one of its kind in the region with loyal followers both from Malaysia, and overseas and has been awarded for six consecutive years as one of the 25 Best International Festivals since 2010. It has attracted over 20,000 locals and foreigners during the 3-day period.

With the interactive afternoon workshops, the audience are able to learn, understand and get to know about indigenous musical instruments from the performers. The festival has its nightly shows staged amidst the tropical rainforest as well as an afternoon concert focusing on chamber like music to cater to the needs of the audience

The visitors are able to taste and purchase a wide variety of local and fusion cuisine from the food mart in the Village. It also features village marts selling and exhibiting local Borneo arts, handicrafts and tattoos.

Angelina Bateman, Director of Events & Corporate Relations of Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) said, “We want to stage the uniqueness of world music by bringing in performers from other parts of the world and also to showcase our own ethnic music and to provide them with an opportunity to perform amidst international bands.

“More innovative ideas are already in the works for our coming 20th Rainforest World Music Festival next year.” she added.

During the upcoming WOMEX 2016, we are also bringing in a promising young musician and visual artiste, Alena Murang. She is one of the first female to openly perform and teach the sape’, an ethnic instrument from Borneo that used to be taboo for women to even touch.

This will be a great opportunity for WOMEX attendees to experience the Sarawak's music.
