Sonic Shapes - CARL WINTHER

Danish jazz has experienced an explosive growth in talent over the past decades: A broad scope of young musicians, encompassing older idioms, hard-core, lyrical neo-cool and freeform. A group of original pianists threaten the monopoly on the international scene of the world-famous Danish bassists.

One of the finest of these young talents is 26-year old Carl Winther, a graduate from the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen. While studying, he was already honing his chops on the jazz scene alongside many well-known musicians. He met the Swedish bassist Joel Illerhag at the conservatory, and they have played Together for the past four years. The band’s drummer is 42-year old Anders Mogensen. Also a graduate from the Rhythmic Conservatory, Mogensen heard Winther and Illehag while serving as an external examiner at conservatory concerts in 2006/2007. He liked the energy and intensity of their approach, and before long they formed a trio, touring Europe and USA in 2010 and recording the CD RED ALERT.

On Sonic Shapes the trio joins forces with Boston-based Jerry Bergonzi, one of the great saxophone influences over the last 35 years. In the 1970’s his apartment in New York was a practice room for like-minded sax-players such as Joe Lovano, Bob Berg and Michael Brecker. Over the years he has often played in Denmark, and his recordings include drummer Alex Riel’s THE RIEL DEAL (Stunt, 1995) and UNRIEL (Stunt, 1997), on which Michael Brecker also played.

SONIC SHAPES was recorded in May 2011 following a successful club tour in Denmark and Sweden. The quartet is smoking, and there is already talk of a new tour. This is not your usual European trio borrowing a little stardust from an American legend. Bergonzi is very enthusiastic about the collaboration, and the inspiration goes both ways.
The two bandleaders each contribute half of the compositions. The musicians represent three generations playing music rooted in sharp, no-non- sense, modern New York jazz. This music isn’t afraid to groove or flex its muscles.

Carl Winther is the son of trumpeter Jens Winther, who died earlier this year, and this CD is dedicated to his memory.

With Tamar Kleinberger on the vocals joined by an ensemble including Adi Silberberg on the recorders and violin, Ryan Hardoon on classical and acoustic guitars, Tal Michles on the bass guitar and Roni Parnass playing percussion the band members present songs they have written which are influenced by styles from different locations and cultures – rap mingles with blues, Irish music flirts with Chinese colours, Europe and Africa join hands, Latin America and the Middle East face each other, and so the band provides a fascinating mix which creates an overall experience of high quality, artistic but catchy songs.

Faÿt - Cankisou

Album from the time when.... ….absinth was poured freely.

The Cankisou band which is successful with their impressive and powerful ethno-rock sound both at home and abroad and for several years has been on the top of local world music scene, has just released their fifth studio album called Faÿt. The group of seven has this time prepared the most rock songs of people of Canki so far and catchy melodies, except traditional “čanki” rhythms, are accompanied by refined guitar.

Album from the time when… ….the air smelled of opium and President Benjamin loved one-legged rooster..

Cankisou have been playing together for some time now and have toured quite a few countries. The previous album Lé la was very strongly influenced by concerts in exotic places. The singer Karel Herman tells us about a theme that is related to the new album: “The unifying theme of the album is half-world and relaxed state of times that have already been forgotten.” While recording, it looks like the musicians from Cankisou remembered their performances in rock formations and they toughened their rhythmic songs in Indies studio under the supervision of Bronek Smid. “Both rock and alternative were shaping us and it’s impossible to hide it forever,” adds David Synák. “But I think it’s only for the first time you hear it. We had actually set up a rehearsal to make new album but we forgot the keys to our studio and Zdenek only had keys to the Progres studio. And there were all the boosters, powerful combos and other set of drums. And the following day we were supposed to record…well, what could we do… Of course, I’m kidding a bit, but that was the atmosphere in which we started.”

Album from the time when… …nudity was common in many places and in Indian freak show the last Canki people were probably performing their after-the-midnight number.

The new album is the fifth studio album of the band and it’s called Faÿt, which means “number five” in Canki language. The lyrics from the land of one-legged nation are again sung by Karel Herman, an unmistakable and impressive with his voice and physique. So both the darker sides of history of Canki people and their most incredible stories can be heard; anything from throat singing to a lullaby. And how the member of the band confirms,: “Each nation has their darker moments and it makes no sense to remain silent about it. There are the moments, yes, but we hope it’s always somehow balanced. We recorded the album with joy so maybe after listening to it for couple of times it will reach your ears.”

In November the CD was No. 17 in the World music charts Europe and now, in December, it is even No. 10. In the top 200 WMCE in 2011 as a whole Faÿt is No. 98 out of 899 moninated CD´s.

Gårdsvenska - Behrang Miri

Behrang Miri adds a unique sound to the Swedish hip hop scene. His contribution not only leads hiphop in a new direction but also gives world music new life and creates that musical balance which reaches a broader audience in the new multicultural Sweden.
The music on his coming album 'Boken Om Vårt Liv' (The Book About Our Life) is soulful, aware, descriptive, inspiring, political and above all innovative. His music is a mix of the rich musical and rhythmic heritage of the Middle East (Arab, Persian, Turkish, Kurdish etc.) and the urban rhythms that hip hop has to offer. The music is world music at its best and the catchy beat just makes you want to dance. Folk music and pop music meet texts and choruses in Arabic, Persian, English and Swedish that will make anyone open their ears, listen and move!

Gretli & heidi - Gretli & Heidi

After years on the vaudeville stage, the 'visual music' by Gretli & Heidi has reached its sounding perfection. Their voices blend perfectly together with glass bells and bottles. Their fingertips produce ravishing sounds from the 27 tuned crystal glasses in the glass harp. Sometimes they pick up their accordions and play along to happy songs with a scent of Central European l’ndler and beer house. Gretli & Heidi mix poetry and humour in an irrepressible clutter. Gretli & Heidi, otherwise known as composers Catharina Back- man and Carin Blom, started their collaboration as musical vaudeville artists, touring around Sweden in a circus tent with Varieté Vauduvill. Their acts took place in a fantasy world studded with edelweiss embroided dresses, lace blouses and men in lederhosen, to the sound of cow bells, yodel, percussive everyday objects and step dance. Gretli & Heidi constructed their first glass harp in 2001 and ever since have explored and incorporated different glass sounds into their musical universe. They have also collaborated with some of Sweden's most well-renowned young improvisa- tion musicians, poets and actors. In 2005, they 'appeared on national TV' when performing the theme of Beethoven's Symphony no 5 with the Swedish Radio Orchestra, using cowbells and an egg timer!

Press clippings:
"It is a peculiar form of international music, which could come from Mongolia, South America
or central Africa as well as from the Tyrol or Stockholm. Simple percussive patterns
female vocal harmonies over ... Subtle humor, yes. Blatant irony, no. A girl's own "glass harp" ...
emerges here as a cosmic sound machine and it all sounds great ...

"Soon, a serene lullaby taken over with bells and wordless angelic choirs, only to be relieved
an experimental accordion tune worthy Lars Hollmer. "

Maximalism - Katzen Kapell

With accordion and fiddle upfront, veterans Katzen Kapell play music that’s just as evocative of Argentina and Eastern Europe as it is of their Swedish homeland. It says something that one of the band’s most well-known songs is called Bukarest. The band lists amongst its diverse influences Astor Piazzolla, Kurt Weill and film- score legends Nino Rota and Bernard Hermann. Toured the USA in the autumn of 2007. Stim Hitfacts / Jan Gradvall

”Katzen Kapell’s compositions and improvisations now draw on dance hybrids from North Africa, the Middle East and the Asian subcontinent, as well as European folk music and modern film scores... “the music fits in everywhere and nowhere.”

”Before I heard the CD I guessed it would be a klez- mer/Yiddish kind of CD. How wrong I was! This sextet impresses me with a good mixture of tango, classical, jazz and rock related music. Six original tracks, over forty minutes of passionate cross-over music with a central role for Catharina Backman on the accordion and Eva Lindal on the violin. It’s energetic, furious and technically of the highest level. Maybe a bit to far out for the real tango fans, but I love this creative album full of
surprising sounds and passionate music”. Folkworld

Following the worldwide success of Bandish, Bandish 2 has created an even wider spectrum of classical music made into easy listening melodies by the poets, composers and singers of Lahore. All the symphonic arrangements are evocative of the given raga, be it Khamaj, Des, Bhoop Kaliyan, Kedara and more. Bandish 2 forms part of the ongoing series of our classical music made accessible to music lovers, especially the younger generation, who can appreciate the intricate structure and nuances of our classical music with the ease and sheer melody of arrangements of the Sachal Studios Orchestra.

Lahoe ke Rang, Hari ke Sang - Hariharan

Lahore is one of the great cultural centres of the Indo-Pak subcontinent. In the land of the Five Rivers (the Punjab), Lahore has long given us music that is traditional and deeply rooted in our classical heritage but which is also at the cutting edge of innovation, melody and sheer brilliance.

Hariharan is one the finest singers of his generation. He is regarded by the great musicians of Lahore as their soul mate. Bringing Hariharan to Lahore enabled us to produce and convey the musical diversity of this beautiful city in his unmistakable, heart-rendering voice.
