DEMONI - KOTTARASHKY LIVE BAND

Kottarashky aka Nikola Gruev opened the door to hitherto undiscovered spaces of Balkan music with his first album "Opa Hey!" in 2009. His approach of using a collection of sounds taken from authentic field recordings is quite similar to artists like Amon Tobin, the only difference being that Gruev found and recorded his sources in the Bulgarian countryside. Combining these, he initiated a tribal digital dance music that went far beyond either the mash up culture of contemporary global producers or the art collages of modern sound architects. He simply amazed with compositions that are extremely complexly woven, yet at the same time catchy, and full of joy or melancholy. At the time however, Kottarashky was unknown, even within his local scene in Bulgaria. It was all the more unbelievable that this dude, who was actually a full-time architect, was producing outstanding tunes and unique rhythms such as these in his back office that were completely unconnected with any popular scenes.

This coincided with a general trend in Sofia of creativity moving into the private sphere. It seems to have been a reflex to the current situation in Bulgaria today, where a group of neo-feudalists have consolidated their positions and their profits, at the same time however, maneuvering the scene in the country into torpor and oppressing all criticism through their domination of the media market. It is a situation where the mainstream outweighs everything else, yet this absence of diversified cultural channels has provided wide-ranging mental free space for the creative. It is clearly this environment that stimulates Kottarashky's innovative and profound style. Triggered by the success of "Opa Hey!", it was obvious to Kottarashky that he now had to transform his tracks into live performances. Once again, he decided not to take the easy way out by playing as one-man laptop band or by surrounding himself with a group of session musicians from the folk scene. Along with his friend Hristo Hadzhiganchev (keyboard, guitar, vocals), he searched for musical companions who had both the skills to transform his sound sketches into a live experience and the curiosity to attempt new experiments. Influenced by artists such as Tom Waits, Jimi Hendrix and Dr. John, they formed a weird band combining Kottarashky's sampler tools and keyboard with traditional clarinet, guitar, bass and drum set. In their first live concerts in 2010, Kottarashky& The Rain Dogs delighted the crowds with their own sound which oscillates somewhere between traditional Bulgarian Balkan music, soul and rock from the 60s.

Bulgaria has plenty of extraordinary musicians, however its live culture is really starving for concerts by bands which play something other than cover versions. In the end, Kottarashky& The Rain Dogs have attracted so many people that the band has become the most booked serious live band performing in Bulgaria today. It was only a matter of time before they got down to recording the album "Demoni". Although Kottarashky's first album included plenty of ideas for a live album, "Demoni" only features one track from "Opa Hey!". Kottarashky& The Rain Dogs recorded eleven fresh tracks that take us into a whole new universe of advanced Balkan Funk and Blues. The compositions still carry the unique Kottarashky sound from the field recordings and his authentic samples. Yet as all the songs have been recorded as band studio sessions, they now feature the pure impact emanating from the clarinet improvisations and the groovy combination of programmed tribal loops with funky drum play.

Musicians:
Kottarashky aka Nikola Gruev

The Rain Dogs:
Aleksandar Dobrev - clarinet
Hristo Hadzhiganchev - guitar, synthesizer
Yordan Geshakov - bass
Atanas Popov - drums

Fractions of Light - Gilad Ronen

Gilad Ronen's debut album, Fractions of Light, is an exquisite reflection of the artist divers inspirations. While interweaving Middle Eastern colors, American neo-classical composition (reminiscent of Samuel Baeber's Addagio for strings), highly organic grooves and electric soundscapes, the coalescence of styles forms a whimsical adventure of surprising beauty.
Ronen is a master saxophonist and flutist who has produced a recording that features himself with orchestra and his musical execution impeccable.
While these works are not jazz per se, any jazz pundit would certainly appreciate the enchantment that Ronen's story, Fractions of light, brings forth. ~ Gary Levitt

Tur Saulite Perties Gaja - Ilgi

Tur Saulite Perties Gaja was named Best Folk Album of 2011 by the Latvian recording industry, and debuted at No. 4 on the World Music Charts Europe in April, 2012.

Ilgi's mature roots in Latvian folk music and the skilled musicianship of its members are apparent in profound and bold interpretations, album after album. Ilgi takes kokles, violin, a cello-like giga, acoustic and bass guitars, percussion, and an adopted kalimba on a tranquil journey in Tur Saulite Perties Gaja, released in 2011 as Ilgi celebrated its 30th anniversary.

The album's central theme is the Latvian pirts, a place for cleansing the body and soul. "Spirits are tossed" by ladling water onto rocks heated by a wood fire, creating a steam bath in the typically small wooden structure. To "perties" (gently flog) with a pirts slota (bundle of twigs) is invigorating. Whether in a private pirts in the countryside or under the direction of a modern day pirts keeper, the tradition is alive in Latvia. Nevertheless, it lacked music - until now.

In "Pirts Kurinasana" (Lighting the Fire), Ilga Reizniece sings of a pirts near a golden oak by a silver stream, "where the Sun went perties" (the album title). Celojums (Journey) is the story of a pirts mouse. Cels (The Road) is a gentle interplay of strings and kalimba. In Persana (Flogging) Reizniece names health promoting flora used in pirts slotas. Lidosana (Flying) showcases Egons Kronbergs' guitar and Maris Muktupavels' kokle and accordion. Gara Pupa (The Beanstalk) is the classic story of a beanstalk that grows up to the sky, but the music suggests the wonderfully languid feeling resulting from a trip to the pirts. It features a duet by Reizniece on violin and Muktupavels on kokle, playing as one after collaborating for three decades. Finally, Paldies (A Song of Thanks) is offered to everyone who makes the pirts possible, from its builder to the water carrier. Throughout, layers of depth are created by Gatis Gaujenieks on giga and bass guitar, and Martins Linde on percussion.

ROOTS BEFORE BRANCHES - HENRY COLE & AFROBEAT COLLECTIVE's

HENRY COLE Twenty eight year old drummer Henry Cole emerged onto the music scene in old San Juan in 1999 where he studied classical percussion at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico. However, it was not until a few years later--while attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston-- that Cole’s musical evolution pointed him naturally towards the jazz tradition. He went back home with a new energy and focus and performed as the “house drummer” for the 1st Annual “Jazzboriken” Festival in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He played with such Latin jazz luminaries as Giovanni Hidalgo, Bobby Valentin, Anthony Carrillo, Dave Valentin, Paoli Mejias, currently he is a drummer of Miguel Zenón, David Sanchez , 90 Miles and Cuban pianist Alfredo Rodriguez .

Crazy With Joy:
Henry Cole & the Afro-Beat Collective Find An Age-Old Mestizo Heart and Fresh Jazz Flash
in Afrobeat on Roots Before Branches

Puerto Rican drummer Henry Cole takes Fela Kuti’s Afro Beat to the new millennium by combining the rootsy sounds of Boricua bomba and plena, Cuban rumba, and the urban energy of hip hop and rock with Lagos’ contagious dance beat. Recorded in Puerto Rico and New York City, this CD features a cast of luminary jazzistas such as reedmen David Sánchez, Miguel Zenón and John Ellis, and salseros like Piro Rodríguez and Cheito Quiñones, plus the raw-edge guitar work of Adam Rogers, among many others. Cole delivers a fresh and funky vision of everything rhythmic via evocative melodies, while pouring his heart and soul into each track. The recording is further enhanced by the delivery of spoken word and rap poetry (en español) by Hemes Ayala (who rocks the mic on the selection “Trabájala”) and Mara Pastor. But it was the groove of the organ-powered “Solo dos veces” that made me a believer. Cole lays down a tasty Afro-funk beat with a keen organic sense of timing and melody that demonstrates his dominion of the percussion idiom. “In the end, all the tracks come together in the spirit of play, like the upbeat jam session of “Old San Juan,” thus ‘capturing the sheer delight of making music that grooves, according to Cole’s own words. Other favorites include the tracks “No Eres Tú, Soy Yo”, and “Una Para Isabel”.

LA GUINEENNE - MORY KANTE

Mory Kanté is a legend—a traditional West African musician who rose to regional stardom in the ‘70s, rocked the world pop charts from his adopted home in Paris in the ‘80s, rode the wave of globalized African music in the ‘90s, and returned home to his native Guinea in the 2000s to become a force for economic development and an inspirational voice for a new generation of Africans. Optimism and inspiration are themes that pervade the songs on Kanté’s new album, La Guinéenne, his eleventh. This is both a love song to Africa, and Guinea, and a treasure chest of hard-nosed advice about trust, hard work, gratitude, and the importance of maintaining traditions in the face of modernity.

Le coup de coeur de babelmed

KARIM BAGGILI, Lea & Kash, Homerecords

Sonic Shapes - CARL WINTHER

Danish jazz has experienced an explosive growth in talent over the past decades: A broad scope of young musicians, encompassing older idioms, hard-core, lyrical neo-cool and freeform. A group of original pianists threaten the monopoly on the international scene of the world-famous Danish bassists.

One of the finest of these young talents is 26-year old Carl Winther, a graduate from the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen. While studying, he was already honing his chops on the jazz scene alongside many well-known musicians. He met the Swedish bassist Joel Illerhag at the conservatory, and they have played Together for the past four years. The band’s drummer is 42-year old Anders Mogensen. Also a graduate from the Rhythmic Conservatory, Mogensen heard Winther and Illehag while serving as an external examiner at conservatory concerts in 2006/2007. He liked the energy and intensity of their approach, and before long they formed a trio, touring Europe and USA in 2010 and recording the CD RED ALERT.

On Sonic Shapes the trio joins forces with Boston-based Jerry Bergonzi, one of the great saxophone influences over the last 35 years. In the 1970’s his apartment in New York was a practice room for like-minded sax-players such as Joe Lovano, Bob Berg and Michael Brecker. Over the years he has often played in Denmark, and his recordings include drummer Alex Riel’s THE RIEL DEAL (Stunt, 1995) and UNRIEL (Stunt, 1997), on which Michael Brecker also played.

SONIC SHAPES was recorded in May 2011 following a successful club tour in Denmark and Sweden. The quartet is smoking, and there is already talk of a new tour. This is not your usual European trio borrowing a little stardust from an American legend. Bergonzi is very enthusiastic about the collaboration, and the inspiration goes both ways.
The two bandleaders each contribute half of the compositions. The musicians represent three generations playing music rooted in sharp, no-non- sense, modern New York jazz. This music isn’t afraid to groove or flex its muscles.

Carl Winther is the son of trumpeter Jens Winther, who died earlier this year, and this CD is dedicated to his memory.

Carl Winther Trio, introduces one of the most talented young pianist ever to emerge from the Scandinavian Jazzscene. Up-and-Coming, 25-year-old Carl Winther has cut his teeth on jamsessions in his hometown Copenhagen in Denmark, a town known for its love for jazz with international stars performing on regular basis.
Despite his young age, Carl Winther, has a mature way of making music where he takes his time to tell his story. With a dazzling technique and a beautiful touch he can handle an impressing palette of emotional moods. He is from a musical family and has gotten his education both streetwise through jamsessions and gigs and also academic at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen.
His style reminiscence of contemporary pianists as McCoy Tyner, Kenny Kirkland, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly ao. But most important, he got his own, both in playing and composing.

Sakina is a Kurdish singer who lives in Vienna. Royê Mi is her first album after some years of live gigs with varying musicians and musical ensembles.

It mixes regional vocal styles with tradition and experimental techniques. Her voice and her lyrics are empathetic and the songs and melodies reflect the life in her native country and the suffering and melancholy of the people.
A booklet with the Kurdish lyrics and their English and German translations is available from her website.

Faÿt - Cankisou

Album from the time when.... ….absinth was poured freely.

The Cankisou band which is successful with their impressive and powerful ethno-rock sound both at home and abroad and for several years has been on the top of local world music scene, has just released their fifth studio album called Faÿt. The group of seven has this time prepared the most rock songs of people of Canki so far and catchy melodies, except traditional “čanki” rhythms, are accompanied by refined guitar.

Album from the time when… ….the air smelled of opium and President Benjamin loved one-legged rooster..

Cankisou have been playing together for some time now and have toured quite a few countries. The previous album Lé la was very strongly influenced by concerts in exotic places. The singer Karel Herman tells us about a theme that is related to the new album: “The unifying theme of the album is half-world and relaxed state of times that have already been forgotten.” While recording, it looks like the musicians from Cankisou remembered their performances in rock formations and they toughened their rhythmic songs in Indies studio under the supervision of Bronek Smid. “Both rock and alternative were shaping us and it’s impossible to hide it forever,” adds David Synák. “But I think it’s only for the first time you hear it. We had actually set up a rehearsal to make new album but we forgot the keys to our studio and Zdenek only had keys to the Progres studio. And there were all the boosters, powerful combos and other set of drums. And the following day we were supposed to record…well, what could we do… Of course, I’m kidding a bit, but that was the atmosphere in which we started.”

Album from the time when… …nudity was common in many places and in Indian freak show the last Canki people were probably performing their after-the-midnight number.

The new album is the fifth studio album of the band and it’s called Faÿt, which means “number five” in Canki language. The lyrics from the land of one-legged nation are again sung by Karel Herman, an unmistakable and impressive with his voice and physique. So both the darker sides of history of Canki people and their most incredible stories can be heard; anything from throat singing to a lullaby. And how the member of the band confirms,: “Each nation has their darker moments and it makes no sense to remain silent about it. There are the moments, yes, but we hope it’s always somehow balanced. We recorded the album with joy so maybe after listening to it for couple of times it will reach your ears.”

In November the CD was No. 17 in the World music charts Europe and now, in December, it is even No. 10. In the top 200 WMCE in 2011 as a whole Faÿt is No. 98 out of 899 moninated CD´s.
