Ficcoes ( Fictions) is a group founded in 1988 by Rui Luis Pereira ( Dudas).
Almost all of the local best musicians worked or recorded with this group ( Alexandre Frazao, Yuri Daniel, Mario Laginha, Quico, Tomas Pimentel, Jorge Reis, Joao Paulo, etc.) and hundreds of concerts along these years were made all around the country and abroad, namely Festivals (Expo 98 , Grenoble Jazz Festival, Encontro com Portugal in Brasil, International jazz Festival in Macau, Mare de Agosto in Acores, JazzFest de Curitiba -Brasil, Composjazz-Spain.
The music is entirely original (composed by Rui Luis Pereira) and we can feel a mediterranean flavour, mixed with folk roots and other influences ( african and brasilian for example), and also the spirit of improvisation that we can find in several popular and oral cultures (Jazz and popular music).
The group has 3 CDs: "Aqua" (PolyGram/Universal), "Zambra" (PolyGram/Universal ) and "Ocidental Praia".
A true nomad of continents and musical experiences, Rui Luis Pereira ("Dudas") was born in Macao and with two and a half years old goes to Mozambique. In the beginning of the seventies, in the former Lourenco Marques, now Maputo, he is part of the locally famous group named "Conceito" where as a soloist he makes already a fusion of influences that go from the "blues" and "rock" (passing by the recent Miles Davis' "bitches brew") up to African influences. In 1975 he goes to Lisbon, Portugal, enters the "Conservatorio Nacional de Musica" and the "Academia de Amadores de Musica" where he studies classical guitar up to the 6th grade with Pinero Nagy. He also attends the "Festival Costa do Estoril" guitar courses, directed by Alberto Ponce, and the Percussion and rhythm course. Among other experiences in the area he was present in the courses then given by the contemporary composer Jorge Peixinho, for example. On the sphere of the improvised music he attends the jazz courses at the "Hot Club de Portugal" in the beginning of the eighties (and for about 2 years) with several Portuguese and North American teachers. At the same time he participates in several workshops namely those given by the French group "Workshop de Lion" with Louis Sclavis and other workshops given by John Abercrombie and Kenny Burrel among others. In other areas he is present in several courses/ workshops on African music, among others, those from the ethno-musicologist Gerhard Kubik, at the "Museu de Etnologia" in Lisbon. Starts his activity as a professional musician in 1980, having played and/or recorded with several local artists and musicians such as Rao Kyao, Pedro Caldeira Cabral (La Batalla), Sergio Godinho and Fausto, among others. Among other musical projects he also worked with the bass player and composer Carlos Barreto, playing Portuguese guitar, and was a founder of a "Chorinhos Trio" with Brazilian and African musicians, collaborates as arranger and instrumentalist with Janita Salome, Filipa Pais and the group "Lua Extravagante" and was a member of the singer's Amelia Muge group. He also has a project with Africa musicians of Guine-Bissau Guto Pires and Mayo Kope named "SIMBY". In 1999 he plays with the "Global Jungle Orchestra" (of the guitar player and composer Paulo Martins) as an arranger, co-director and performer, where he worked with names like John Stubblefield, Graham Haynes, Hamid Drake, Frank Colon, Carlos Zingaro, Carlos Bechegas, Joao Paulo and others. In the last 12 years he exercises the activity of musical director of the theatre group "MAIZUM" to whom he composes original music for several plays. In the area of the cinema he is the author of the original music for several movies.
