Hail to the worthy recipient of this year's WOMEX Artist Award. Musician, poet, instrument-maker and uncompromising champion of Creole culture and
maloya, the rhythm on which plantation workers have long been singing their joys and woes. It's the Reunionese blues and although today it is part of the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of Intangible Culture, it was banned by the French authorities for many years because of its links
with autonomous groups and the Communist party, and almost died out. For Danyel Waro, maloya is the vehicle for the word. He is a poet of the Creole language who speaks his mind about the problems of contemporary Reunion, the dominance of French culture, racism, work, love and death, calling for unity among the Africans, Madagascans, Indians and Europeans who make up the island's population.
