company description
SAIN (Recordiau) Cyf., now known simply as 'SAIN' (which is the Welsh word for 'sound', and pronounced like the English word 'sign') is Wales' leading recording company, founded in 1969 in Cardiff by DAFYDD IWAN, HUW JONES and BRIAN MORGAN EDWARDS.When the present 24-track studio was opened at its present site (Canolfan Sain) in 1980 it was one of the most advanced in Europe. The company also had an 8-track mobile studio, mostly used for recording large choirs in other locations, and open-air rock-concerts. In 1984 "Studio Two" was opened by Aled Jones, and Sain have now just completed Studio Three. The main studio is now equipped with an AMEK Rembrandt 'total recall' 56 channel desk, Radar 24 track hard drive recorder and Fostex DV40 DVD Master Recorder, which means that the studio has kept pace with all the audio technological advances over the years!
At present the Company has a total of 24 staff based at Canolfan Sain in Llandwrog, and the retail outlet at Caernarfon. SAIN also has a back catalogue which boasts over a 1000 titles.
As well as producing around 50 new CD titles every year, SAIN has also been the launching pad for some great musical careers, including international opera stars BRYN TERFEL, ALED JONES, GWYN HUGHES JONES and RHYS MEIRION; CATATONIA, IRIS WILLIAMS, MARY HOPKIN, DENNIS O'NEILL, harpist CATRIN FINCH, and folk-groups CRASDANT and AR LOG.
Wales is best known for its male choirs, and SAIN has a large catalogue of recordings by the best of these, including RHOS, PENDYRUS, LLANELLI, PONTARDDULAIS, TREORCI, MORRISTON, GODRE'R ARAN, BRYTHONIAID and CAERNARFON. Also a fine collection of mixed choirs, ladies choirs and children's choirs.
The company website (www.sainwales.com) has been live for 12 years, and the shopping basket facility was added 7 years ago. Sain's retail outlet Na-Nog also has an on-line shop (www.na-nog.com) , where you can buy all of Sain's products. Sain has recently updated its own website and has introduced its own download shop. All of Sain's CDs and tracks can also be downloaded from itunes www.apple.com/itunes or from State 51 and other well known platforms.
