SAMPAD's latest production Motherland was a specially commissioned dance/music theatre piece to remember the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act. It toured nationally across both inner city and rural areas of the UK.

Vibrant dance, live music and lyrical poetry come together to create Motherland - a compelling story of love, conflict, revenge and resolution set in a world of slavery and forced migration.

It told a story of epic journeys through time and across continents in a celebration of different cultures, individual strengths and powerful emotions. Energetic and uplifting, Motherland saw traditional art forms cross boundaries and come together to create a new and distinctive piece of dance/music theatre. An international cast united on stage to create the sounds, rhythms and movements of India, Africa, the Caribbean and the UK to celebrate the power of the human spirit

"I found Motherland exhilarating and profoundly moving, weaving its story of love, desire, greed, corruption and forgiveness... a tale told brilliantly with words, music and dance... provocative and moving theatre" Jenny Agutter, Actor

"this show seamlessly integrates dynamic choreography, beautiful music and a moving story... performances are truly captivating especially Pallavi Arun whose vocals are stunning. Motherland is a show with real soul" Niraj Chag, musician, producer and composer

"...the shocking stuff was beautiful and the beautiful stuff was sublime.... rarely have i seen such a melding of cultures, both ethnic and discipline.." Steve Mesure FRSA
