El Hadj N'Diaye is one of the most compelling emerging artists in the Senegalese music scene. Xel is his second album, though it's his first for Harmonia Mundi's World Village label.
The album is blessed with a sense of drama that permeates every track. N'Diaye has a vocal style that is different from what we generally hear from West African stylists. There's an emotional charge in his voice that's actually reminiscent of flamenco singers, though on Xel, he uses this highly charged vibe in the service of music that is equally swayed by Senegalese m'balax and rock.
