The Serbian Gypsy singer Ljiljana Buttler is one of the great re-discovered voices of Eastern Europe.
Learning her trade singing in the cafes of a small Bosnian town, she became a national star in Belgrade appearing on TV and radio. However Buttler's brand of visceral, intense and passionate gypsy soul was eclipsed in the late 1980s by the ubiquitous sounds of Euro-pop which came to dominate the post-communist world.

Buttler went to ground, lived out the war, eventually re-emerging to a whole new generation of fans and devotees in 2000 with acclaimed appearances in the UK at Womad and the Barbican. 'Frozen Roses', her third album since her comeback, is a harmonious blend of Buttler's roots, Balkan folk, with the rhythmic elements of jazz and blues. Often called the 'Billie Holiday of Gypsy Music', in reality, she's the true mother of gypsy soul.
