For centuries the Batonga lived on the northern and
southern banks of the Zambezi, in what are now
Zambia and Zimbabwe. In 1958 they were forcibly
resettled to make way for the hydro-electric project
Kariba Dam, and physically separated by the lake.
Forty years on, these recordings from both sides of
the lake, show their rich musical culture to be very
much alive - with kankowela thumb-pianos, solid
drumming, beautiful rain songs, and the unique
budima music with up to 100 participants each
blowing a one-note horn. As pure as you can get....
