Hugh Tracey recorded many guitarists in southern
Mozambique during the fifties. Together, this
selection of tracks represents the roots of what
later became known as marrabenta. Southern
Mozambique developed its own distinctive sound:
listen to the enigmatic Feliciano Gomes sing about
the problems of getting children, about promiscuity
of women, snobism, jealousy, the supernatural,
enjoy Aurelio Kowano's virtuoso rhythm guitar
playing, and others - now no longer forgotten.
