Baxtalo is a young Danish Balkan band - who with great intensity have created their own soundscape - exotic, cinematic and devil-may-care in subtle some.
They play fierce and convincing and they never
shy away from the dream of an eternally-long party
with dance and romance.
Balkan music is known for having the nerve and
temperament and the band communicates on this beautiful way: a live concert with Baxtalo is a sweaty experience - the band's six musicians delivers presence and honesty of the emotions run high
The ancient Roma songs have new Danish texts
made by frontwoman and songwriter Gunni Torp its
about love, money shortage, one night stand, hope,
longing and wild horses. It's nostalgic and super-
contemporary - vulnerable and raw.
With them on stage the band has a 100 year old
cymbalum, which is both a melody and percussion
instrument. With piano strings stretched across something resembling a dining table - the instrument sounds like a dancing drunk version of the European piano and together with saxophone, violin, accordion, doublebass and
guitar it creates Baxtalo's original sound.
"Baxtalo" is an exclamation and a greeting on Romani, Roma language. It means happiness and blessed wealth - In material and spiritual sense.
