company descriptionNew Zealand Māori composer-performer Rob Thorne, M.A, (Ngāti Tumutumu) is a diverse explorer in the newly revived evolution of Taonga Pūoro (traditional Māori instruments), fusing these ancient voices with modern sounds, technology and techniques.
He creates ethereal immersive and powerful works that range from stage to site-specific through to contemporary chamber music and ground-breaking electronica - with expert knowledge and a deep respect of tradition.
Existing shows include captivating live versions of stunning solo album "Whāia te Māramatanga" (Rattle Records/NZ) and collaboration "Clear Stones'" (Subtext Records/Berlin) with ground-breaking electronica artist Fis.
Fis and Rob Thorne have more on the horizon including a showcase at SXSW2018, and Rob has an upcoming collaborative album and live-show with Athens-based pianist Tania Giannouli.
As the current New Zealand School of Music's Composer-in-Residence, Rob is creating several solo and small group works - and a commissioned piece to perform with the acclaimed New Zealand String Quartet in a Taonga Pūoro based full length festival show.
