Occitan Cheeky Songs

Album "Chin Na Na Poun" released in May 2007 (daqui/Harmonia Mundi)

Manu Theron, Patrick Vaillant and Daniel
Malavergne turned their attention to the repertoire
of Victor Gelu, the mythical 19th-century poet and
chansonnier from Marseille... His crude, sometimes
violent texts are from a world that industrialisation
had plunged into uncertainty. It was an odd,
turbulent, baroque and talkative society that Gelu
depicted, using caricatures reminiscent as much of
Neapolitan farce as of melodrama.
To play in this universe, the musicians dig deep
into the popular music of the 19th century and the
present day. Tuba, mandolin and voices call out to
or harangue each other without concession as the
songs unfold, sometimes slipping into unexpected
musical references much as one would come across
the unexpected in an animated street.
They are aiming neither for historical
reconstruction nor pseudo-modernisation above
all, they are attempting to reach the human
dimension, both grotesque and moving, of a
people's poet who was in raptures with the chin-
na-na poun, chin-na-na poun of cabaret music.
