Its women members are able to effect a seamless transition from the gentlest piano to an incredible, breath-taking fortissimo. From beginning to end the choir explored the whole dynamic range. "The Gori Women's Choir" was founded in 1970 at the city's School of Music. Its members are all aged between fifteen and thirty-five and either study at the School or already teach at the region's schools and colleges of music. Their conductor, Shalva Mosidze, studied choral conducting at the conservatory in Tbilisi, where he now teaches conducting. He is helping to shape the choir's unusual vocal style, transforming it into a precision instrument made up of human voices. The "Gori Women" performs a repertory ranging widely from the Renaissance to the present day, but with particular emphasis on music by contemporary Georgian composers, for whom the choir frequently provides an indispensable sounding board, amog them Yosif Ketchakhmadze, Otar Taktakishvili.
