Mugam is both a lettered and popular musical tradition, open to improvisation. It combines one singer with traditional instrument players (lute tar, kemence and tambourine daf).
It comes from the meeting of Persian and Oghuz Turkish populations in Caucasia, meeting at the origin of Azerbaijani culture. Mugam is a bright mix of Iranian maqam, Persian radif and Turkish makam, moreover, it also embraces melodies and technics of ashiq bards. Which gives a really original and deeply planted expression. Nowadays, you can heard mugam in toy-s wedding celebrations.
The singer Alim Qasimov contributed to make mugham famous outside of Azerbaijan. And it was proclaimed in 2003 ‘Masterpiece of the oral and immaterial Heritage by UNESCO.
