Gaiteiros de Lisboa

* A living treasure of portuguese music *

There are but a few names in the Portuguese music scene that can claim such a wide and solid consensus as the one enjoyed by Gaiteiros de Lisboa. To call them an "institution" could be erroneous and give the impression of a certain rigidity, but Gaiteiros de Lisboa proudly display the status of "Group of Great Cultural Interest" given to them by the Government Cultural division and they have been everything but rigid in their history that is made of openness, imagination and a success that can only be synonymous with quality.

Gaiteiros de Lisboa were born in 1993 by the hand of Paulo Marinho, the bagpiper in Setima Legiao, a cult Portuguese pop rock band in the 80s and early nineties. Currently, Gaiteiros includes the musicians Carlos Guerreiro, Jose Manuel David, Pedro Calado, Paulo Marinho, Pedro Casaes and Rui Vaz, a luxury group made of people with a rich and wide experience with top Portuguese stars like Jose Afonso, Sergio Godinho, Vitorino, Amelia Muge, Rui Veloso or Setima Legiao.

In the music of Gaiteiros, praised through the years by the entire Portuguese music press, one finds echoes of history and the result of a serious look to the Portuguese roots, to the connections that ties us to Europe and the world, but also a look to the possibilities that the future may bring. From Invasoes Barbaras the first CD from 1994 to Satiro the most recent work, from 2006, they managed to grow, collect applause all over Portugal but also in countries like Spain, France or Germany.

"The modernity can be found many times on these surprises of coming and going in the time machine", wrote a well known critic about Invasoes Barbaras. Another eminent critic, in the reference daily Publico, did not hesitate in 1997 when he described Boca do Inferno as the Portuguese album of the year. Exactly the same award that the music weekly Blitz gave to that album. About Macareu also in Blitz another critic wrote that "up until now the Gaiteiros de Lisboa have proved to be incapable of producing something other than a triumphant master piece". This level of praise could also be found on the texts devoted to live presentations by the Gaiteiros.

They can't, in fact, not be brilliant.

And on this path, Gaiteiros have collected several allies: they worked closely with legendary composer and producer Jose Mario Branco, that was even part of the group at a certain time, opened gigs for Setima Legiao, collaborated with top Portuguese names, from hip hop to fado, and created an effective bridge with Spain, where the bagpipes also have a strong tradition and where the Gaiteiros signed an epic presentation at the Sevilla edition of the Womex festival.

Now they are returning to the stages with a new concert based on their new album "Avis Rara" but including also some of their best material.
Their instrument inventions together with a very special take on the idea of world music.
